The method of tissue engineering is related to the term of regenerative medicine, which mainly deals with the support of the natural healing process.
Tissue engineering is based upon the cultivation of vital cells of an organism outside the target tissue, in order to implant them, in most cases, in the same organism and thus to achieve or restore the function of the tissue.

Prior to cultivation, the biological or synthetic framework is combined with the culture of the extracted vital materials. The cultivation can be proceeded either in the body during in vivo tissue engineering, or in the laboratory (in vitro tissue engineering). These regenerates will then be implanted in the target area of the organism.
The advantage of such an implant with cells partly deriving from the patient is that it is accepted by the patient’s immune system as the cell surface is recognised as “its own”. Therefore tissue engineering implants are usually not rejected and are notably tolerated by the patients. |
