In case many teeth are lost, there is no other choice but to apply a removable prosthesis. However, removable (partial or full) prosthesis due to its function is considered less favourable than fixed prosthesis.

Partial dentures

A partial denture is a removable prosthesis, which will be fixed to the remaining teeth for patients who still have teeth. However partial dentures are not suited as a permanent solution due to the fact that, using fixation clasps, teeth will be damaged and loosen.

Furthermore, the toothless part of the jaw is subject to a loss of the jaw bone, thus it is essential for most patients to regularly reline*the partial denture in order to improve the position of the denture on its base.

Full dentures

In case there are no natural teeth left, full dentures should be applied. The fixation of full denture is mainly achieved by the suction effect between the dentures and mucosa. Thus the exact fit of the denture is absolutely essential.

Full dentures transfer all the chewing pressure directly to the mucosa they cover and to the underlying jaw bone. In additional, the chewing power is remarkably reduced due to constrained anchoring of the denture in the mouth. Due to the fact that in the course of time, edentation causes the degeneration of jaw bone, the hold of the denture will worsen further. Relining* and a bonding agent are mostly helpful only for short time.
* The denture basis (occlusal rest surface on the jaw ridge) will be newly formed after deformation of the toothless part of the jaw, in order to improve fit and hold of the denture.
